Betty Dillashaw, Director of Handbell Program
Before learning to ring handbells, Betty’s musical performances and teaching involved only piano, organ and singing. Those musical experiences combined with her professional experiences teaching all ages and ability levels of students in K-12 public schools and community college have been invaluable in the transition to teaching both adults and children how to ring handbells and choirchimes. Her prior position as Handbell Director at Elon Community Church in Elon, NC, allowed opportunities for musical work and collaboration with all ages and proficiency levels of musicians. A result of her work there is the annual, week-long Music Camp that continues in August of every year.
Since moving to Asheville and then joining FCUCC, Asheville, Betty has continued to be active in the handbell community, performing for a few seasons with the Blue Ridge Ringers and now serving as director of Blue Ridge Chamber Ringers, a six-ringer ensemble that performs in venues not large enough to accommodate the five-octave setup required for the larger Blue Ridge Ringers group. At FCUCC, Asheville, Betty directs the church’s Oak Street Ringers, a three-octave choir that rings Malmark handbells and choirchimes. On Sunday mornings, Betty also teaches music to children every Sunday morning during Chiming In time, with the goal of the children regularly being a part of worship services.
